Learn by Hand

Making workshops that run with the seasons

Our workshops move in cycles, like everything at Pilkington Wood — a handful of unhurried sessions spread through the year, each one a chance to get together, slow down, and make something real with your hands.

This is the Make in Move · Make · Gather: the same philosophy that runs through the yoga mat carried into thread, fabric, and paint. No experience needed — none at all. No perfection expected, either. You'll be guided step by step, with everything provided, and you'll leave with something you made and a skill you'll keep.

Making, like yoga, is less about the finished pose and more about the practice. Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and let your hands do the thinking for a while.

Second Life Bags: Up-cycle Your Old Jeans

Turn worn denim into a beautiful, sturdy tote — no sewing experience needed

Bring a pair of old jeans — or use ours — and spend the session sewing them into a durable, lined tote bag. Every step guided, from cutting the pattern to finishing the seams. Absolute beginners very welcome; this is where everyone starts.

What to expect:

Arrive to tea, coffee and nibbles. We get started with the make. A little, light stretch to move your body will be offered half way through the session. No obligation to join in. This is your day.

A light lunch of cheese, sourdough and salad will be provided… bring a dish if you wish to add to a ‘pot luck’ lunch. Let us know of any allergies/dietaries at least 24 hours before the session starts.

Machines and equipment are all provided including fabric to line your bag and threads to embroider ‘fabric tattoos’ while you take turns on the machines. If you wish to use a specific fabric, just bring it along. Bring your own old jeans or let us know if you would like us to provide some for you. You leave with a new bag, new skills, a new sense of satisfaction and the possibility of new friends.

Why make?

There's a growing body of evidence that hands-on craft isn't just enjoyable — it's genuinely good for you. Studies suggest mindful making can lower stress and lift mood in ways that exercise alone doesn't quite reach.

Why making matters

Beyond the quiet satisfaction of it, making is a genuinely better path for the planet. The UK throws away over 300,000 tonnes of clothing every year, and globally the fashion industry sends around 92 million tonnes of textiles to landfill annually — with jeans one of the most commonly discarded items of all. Studies estimate the jeans industry alone generates over two million tonnes of waste a year, with a single pair costing thousands of litres of water to produce.

Every pair of jeans rescued from landfill is a small, satisfying act of rebellion. And there's growing evidence that hands-on craft — sewing, mending, making — is as good for your head as it is for the planet: slow, absorbed creation that lowers stress in ways even exercise doesn't quite reach.

We just call it what it is: a couple of hours where the world goes quiet and your hands do the thinking.
